On Thursday, we had our first meeting with our cake maker :) I'm really excited about both of our cakes & our baker! (We haven't gotten to taste test just yet, but that's coming tomorrow!!!)
First, our baker, she is super nice! Everyone thinks so! When I signed at our reception site, I mentioned I was considering going with this baker to see the event coordinator opinion & she was so excited! She said that Jaclyn was absolutely fabulous & who she gets all of her cakes from when she has events! This is exactly the type of recommendation I take to heart & I was so glad to know I would be getting to work with her! Part of the reason I picked this company was that it is a small, family owned bakery where the mom works out of her home, professional grade kitchen! There's something in me that loves supporting small businesses and I know she is going to work to make my cake dreams a reality!
So, what are my dreams? I'm glad you asked! First off, I have no idea!!! Well, ok I have lots of ideas, but they keep changing (I'm sure the baker is going to HATE me by the time she actually makes my cake)
As I said, we are getting both cakes from the same place so let's start by talking about my bridal cake (the big white one) :)
When I went to the meeting Thursday I had GRAND plans for my cake. Here's what all I wanted:
Shape/turning motion (source)
I love the square shape & how it turns just so slightly! It's so cool & different! So that was going to be the shape & placement of the layers in the cake. In order to make the cake turn look like it was on purpose stylized (not just a mistake), it had to be at least 5 layers, and I'm not inviting the whole world to my wedding so it was going to be really tall & skinny (red flag #1).
The quilting pattern on this is beautiful! (source)
I love the ribbons on the bottom of each layer (source)
So, each layer was going to have quilting and ribbon. The quilts will also have little dots where they meet (I can't find a picture, but it looks kinda like the one with the ribbons above but with quilts also, I promise, its cute). They would look like little pearls.
Other details:
Bows!!! (source)
I really wanted one of these bows! (Not one on each layer like this) just one on a middle layer. I think that's be super cute! (and girly - the cake is the one place - other than myself - that I'm being super girly)
Birdies!!! (source)
I'm not sure why, but I am kinda super in love with birds! I really wanted a cake topper that is ceramic/porcelain that is more like a statue that we can put in our home for the rest of our lives (read: classic). These birds are exactly what I wanted!! (And Ryan loves them, although no one else seems to...)
So, fast forward to the meeting, I told her all of the details & everything. She said it was no problem & quoted us $3.25 a serving. I calculated it out for our expected guests and it put us over $550 for my cake!!! Now, talking to my mom, she said this is less than she really expected, but I cannot stomach paying that much for one detail... (red flag #2). In the end, I gave up & said ok we will just deal with that price....
Well, that was until I got on Pinterest the next day & saw this beauty that I had saved a while back:
It's so beautiful & classic & I am in love!!! (In white & Tiffany Blue of course!!!) I sent this picture to the baker explaining that I changed my mind & am kinda crazy. She came back with a quote of $2.95 a serving (her base price)!!! To think, I will be getting this beautiful cake for just over $500! It makes me feel so much better! (Honestly, I will probably drop the number of expected guests & save even more!)
Ok enough about my cake, onto Ryans! We were having trouble coming up with an idea for a groom's cake that matched his/our personalities until we saw this on pinterest:
This speaks to both of our super nerd sides (ok, he is more nerd than me, but we are both pretty big nerds). If you don't know where this is from, it is a web comic named xkcd which is nerd humor & the actual one it is based on (Ryan's favorite) is this:
We will probably go with a sheet cake (less expensive than tiered), but definitely want the red hearts (and Ryan wants to add some of his personal favorite equations, my nerd).
So, am I crazy for changing my mind so drastically? (Oh and don't worry, the birds will reappear elsewhere)
