Last Wednesday, my mom & I went to the shop in Dallas where my sister bought her wedding dress. We explained the WHOLE situation to them & the consultant was really understanding. When I told her that I wanted the dress to be white (rather than Ivory), she got it in her mind that I needed lace.
Now, I'm not against lace, but I felt like my sister in all the dresses, rather then myself. (Not a good sign). She even held my sisters dress up next to me (yes, they still sell it 4 years after her wedding), and they looked super similar to me. I eventually had to tell her, no lace. She was hesitant, but its my dress so she started to bring me more options. I figured out a style I liked, and had a favorite dress. So, after 2 hours there, we left with a favorite in mind.
We went to another store to play a little game. The game was called "beat the dress". I was not going to buy a dress until I had tried on ALL options, so I kept trying on different things. I wasn't able to find another dress that compared. I even went to a different salon that had that dress (whose sample was closer to my size), and the lady was like, that's your dress, let's measure you. I had to be like WHOA, WHOA, WHOA, not ready!
So, we went home Wednesday night (after trying on dresses for 5/6 hours, where I tried on close to 50 dresses, I think) and talked to my dad. He liked the look of the dress & the price, so we made plans to go the next day & show him.
On Thursday, we went back to the first salon & the same consultant helped us (which I enjoyed because she was really nice & helpful & understood the situation). She asked "Just one dress or are we trying on more?" Well, I still wasn't sure, so I said we needed to try on more, but that was currently the favorite. I went around & picked more dresses (in the same style as the first, since that was what I was sure I wanted.) We went back to the fitting room, and she said, let's try on the new ones first, then we will try on the favorite.
Well the first I tried to put on was too small (so I couldn't even get it on, stupid sample sizes). She said that we would hold it in front of me once I had another dress on to get an idea how it would look. The second I put on was.... WOW!!! It was absolutely amazing! I couldn't help but look at myself & mom started tearing up! (Because we knew we were seriously looking at dresses to order soon, we had brought my veil & necklace - I didn't want to change either of those.) I put them on with the dress & it looked like they were all made for each other! The beading on the veil & dress pretty much matched! The consultant kept pulling other salon ladies into the room saying "Look at this veil! We need to order it! & show it with this dress!" (They carried the veil maker, but not that veil). It made me feel like a model to be show off like that.
I tried on the rest of the dresses, but nothing compared to that first one. Then I tried on the favorite from the day before, and it failed! The new dress was SO much more & so perfect! It didn't even need the alterations that the other favorite needed (I wanted to put in a corset).
I put back on that first one & started trying to pull it apart. I wanted to find something wrong with it (it was hard to make a decision), but I couldn't find anything wrong with it! The alterations lady (the mom of a friend I danced with in high school) came in & said it was perfect! She showed me some bustles (I liked the one she said was less traditional for this dress, of course) & dispelled the one fear I had about the dress (an easy fix to make it perfect!) So, I ordered the dress!!! It should be here just before Christmas!!!
Why did I NEED to order a dress soon? Well, designers take 6-8 months to get them in plus 1-2 months for alterations (possible more if it need lots of alterations, like we already ordered it big & I'm planning - and have already started - to lose a ton of weight). Since I want to take bridal pics over spring break (in March), and don't live near my parents (who HAD to be involved in finding the dress), this was really the last week we would be together in time to order & get in a dress. (From a designer like these that make them after you order them.)
Last question I know you all have: So, what does it look like??? Well, I showed everyone I knew (who asked) pics of the old dress, before realizing that I wanted it to be a surprise for people! So, new rule, only bridal party (other than the groom) gets to see the dress! (I'm sure some hints will accidentally drop about small, vague details about it as I blog, but no pics for anyone, sorry!) Just know, it looks AMAZING!!! And this is how I felt after picking the dress:
They have this cute thing where they play the wedding march & blow bubbles at you as you walk out of the salon after buying your dress!!! How fun!!!
